Overview
A 3 day insight into the workings of the law firm Shoosmiths. A great opportunity to meet staff Shoosmiths from across the firms different offices and different sectors. The placement involved a number of stimulating tasks and workshops with the project being a personal highlight. We were also given a lot of Q&A opportunities which improved our understanding of the work of the firm and the culture of the firm. A very enjoyable experience.
Skills
The group work exercise allowed for a value opportunity to improve online team work. This experience will be essential for those candidates progressing to the assessment centre stage. Have a degree in Scots law, I felt the placement gave a unique insight into the English legal system as well as the different routes available to English applicants.
Business Insight
The placement gave a genuine insight into the core sectors at Shoosmiths and the way the business is run on a day to day basis. The experience also gave a strong indication of the type of work undertaken by Shoosmiths trainees. The trainee Q&A and the one to one with our trainee buddy were especially valuable experiences.
Culture
The Shoosmiths culture stands out as being genuine and unique. A commitment to team work, diversity, inclusion and transparency make the firm an exceptional opportunity for a future legal trainee. The staff were all friendly, approachable and extremely knowledgeable. I left with the impression that it would be a great place to train but also a great place to remain and continue as a NQ and then associate.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the virtual placement and would highly recommend it to anyone applying for legal a traineeship in the future. As a Scottish applicants a few of the workshops didn’t apply to the Edinburgh office. I felt this was the only area of the placement that didn’t work from my perspective. 85% of the applicants were for the English offices so naturally the experience was tailored more to the vast majority.
Yes
Apply for the placement as it will give any applicants progressing to the assessment centre a real advantage. It is a great opportunity to see if Shoosmiths is a good fit for you and if you are a good fit for Shoosmiths. Do your research and focus on the culture and core values of the firm. These values are a key differentiator and understanding them is essential for the full application process.
