Overview
My role is to support and prepare for engine builds featuring new technology. I have to provide feedback to design engineers the manufacturability of their parts and present this information during reviews. I must also work to solve and close build issues witnessed and work with global teams to overcome engineering problems.
Skills
I have learnt valuable communication skills during my placement by contributing in global meetings and design reviews. I have build on practical skills gained at University by assisting operators with part installation during engine builds. I have also gained leadership skills from having a leading role during engine builds.
Responsibilities
I was asked to lead an engine build, once I felt confident to do so. I was also asked to take over my supervisors role in contributing in meetings, and make critical decisions when assessing manufacturability of new parts.
Support & Guidance
During the first month I joined other students in mandatory training which gave a great insight into the past present and future of the company. I was then assisted by a previous student for a month until I was ready to work independently.
Culture
Due to Covid 19, I worked mostly at home. However, everyone was very proactive in responding to messages and emails. When I was in the office the general atmosphere was professional yet welcoming.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement with Cummins and would definitely recommend it. If I could do it differently I would do it pre Covid!
