Overview
I use computer software, microsoft excel and hand calculations to complete analysis. This analysis can be structural, modal, thermal, 2d or 3d CFD so there is a wide variety of work. I follow standards to ensure my work covers everything needed for the project and that I have set up the analysis correctly. I work on a project basis, so will have 2-3 projects at any one time. I talk to the internal customer regarding their expectations for the project and work with my manager to complete the work to their satisfaction.
Skills
I had some experience in analysis from my university modules, however I have massively improved my skills and can independently set up and run complex analysis models. I have also had the opportunity to learn new types of computational analysis and have been supported well through that. Both through access to online learning platforms, but also other direct support from other engineers. Through talking to customers and leading meetings I have increased my presentation and communication skills.
Responsibilities
After being given time to properly learn analysis I was given an appropriate amount of responsibility. As I moved through my time with the company the amount of responsibility given increased as I grew more confident in my ability. I was supported with my own professional projects, which unless I needed help with I was free to work on independently. This meant I have a lot of responsibility, however knew that there was support if and when I needed it.
Support & Guidance
I am happy with the amount of support I received. Due to working from home it was difficult to compare to if I was in the office as there is no face to face guidance or support. However I knew if I needed help I could reach out to other engineers. The technology in place meant that despite being in different locations I could access all of the hardware and software needed to do my job.
Culture
Again due to working from home there were no social or sports clubs, I am unsure if these would have happened if this had been a normal year. There were lots of diversity initiatives and the company seemed to be doing things to support the local community during COVID 19. Whilst the atmosphere and culture were good there were no structured events or social activities to connect the placement students working at the same site.
Your Impressions
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my placement, the team I joined were nice and welcoming and I felt I was given good quality work with a good amount of responsibility. It surpassed my expectations with regards to the support and type of work I have carried out, especially during COVID. The company culture is good, with frequent emails showcasing various diversity initiatives. Overall, I would go back to this placement and would recommend it to others looking to build their skills.
Yes
Do your research about the company and understand the type of work it does, what markets it operates in and their values. Apply for a position which you are interested in and show your passion in the interview, don't be afraid to ask questions if you are unsure. Finally once you have started the job, take every opportunity you can and get stuck in. The only way you can learn is by trying new things and not being afraid to make mistakes.
