Overview
Working on VPI programs in cross-functional teams, purchasing new parts to be built on engines predominantly built in Darlington. I work on 5 different programs, all at different stages of the program with their own individual milestones and challenges. I join calls to discuss where parts are, I order these parts from suppliers globally and track the orders through communicating with the supplier to ensure they meet build.
Skills
I have worked 100% from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic so I feel that my skills have had to develop at an even quicker pace. I think that my teamwork, communications and time management skills have definitely improved due to working on project teams and to deadlines on these programs. I also now feel a lot more confident and I am not afraid to take on responsibility in taks.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement but also given the necessary amount of support when needed. I never felt like I was being asked too much but I have also been given sole responsibility of programs from a purchasing standpoint. The placement definitely involves the giving of responsibility and I feel that it has enabled me to develop effectively as a person and a worker.
Support & Guidance
The support provided has been really really good, especially with the barrier of working from home. Support and guidance has been difficult to provide through Teams, Zoom and emails but my colleagues have effectively made sure I don't feel alone. The crossover of the former placement student staying on to support me has definitely helped me and I aim to do the same with next years student.
Culture
The culture is really nice and everybody is there for each other. My manager is very supportive and the team is very diverse.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement and I would 100% recommend Cummins as an employer. The responsibility, support and lessons I have been given have really been beneficial.
Yes
I would recommend to be yourself in the interview and explain why you have particular strengths through examples and experiences. Also to research the company and bring in the company's values into your answers.
