Overview
On a day-to-day basis I prepare and post internal communications, respond to email enquiries to advise employees on internal policies, and liaise between different teams to ensure the correct advise is given. I organise volunteering projects and support other project leaders to ensure they have all the resources necessary to lead a successful event, whilst complying to internal policies and requirements.
Skills
I have had numerous opportunities to develop new and existing skills through my day job, and other projects I have been able to get involved in. My confidence throughout the year has grown greatly as a direct result of the support provided to me by my managers. I have also had the chance to develop my public speaking skills in a (virtual) fashion as my team was aware this was a priority and thus created opportunities for me to engage in activities to help support my development.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility throughout my placement year and treated as one of the team - rather than just the team's intern. My managers often give me independent tasks to complete and then have a weekly check-in to make sure I am on track. They are always available if extra support is needed and have only been supportive in my development throughout my time at Oracle.
Support & Guidance
The support provided throughout my internship could not have been better. From day one my managers have ensured that I have had the opportunity to focus on personal development as well as completing my role and have suggested different opportunities for me to get involved in to help support this further. There is also an intern mentoring programme that paired me with a mentor from a different Line of Business which was a great way to network and talk about other things outside the day job.
Culture
My placement was completely virtual so I am unable to comment on the general atmosphere as I have only come into contact with a fraction of all the employees. However, everyone that I have met has been lovely and has given me a great sense of a positive company culture.
Your Impressions
My placement year at Oracle definitely exceeded my expectations due to the support and openness by my team. I thought that comin on-board and working completely remotely would be a huge disadvantage and, whilst it has had it's set backs, I have had a fantastic year and grown a lot. I now feel much better prepared to return to University and feel much more hopeful about graduate job prospects as Oracle has provided me with a great starting point for the rest of my career.
Yes
Don't be apprehensive and try to enjoy the process as much as possible. Everyone I encountered when applying was friendly and very supportive. In my experience, Oracle is very much an employer that not only focuses on your experiences/skills but your personality and are invested in seeing you progress. Part of this is making sure that you a right fit for Oracle and that you are a motivated individual with the capability of growth.
