Overview
Check data and ensure that testing runs 24/7. Resolve any issues present and that the tests have ran as they should. Work with internal/external customers to schedule new tests. Plan for future types of testing and ensure engines are up fitted correctly.
Skills
Learned lots of soft skills such as communication, planning, leadership/management and teamwork within multiple departments. How to problem solve and apply knowledge to the real world. Steps involved to implement a long term fix to a issue. Learned a lot about engine specific information and the software behind controlling the test cells.
Responsibilities
Yes within the first few weeks you are assigned a cell to work on. You are left responsible for keeping the tests running. After a month of two you will also be given a more department focused personal project which is yours to manage/complete.
Support & Guidance
Everyone in the department is very helpful and eager to help. Most have been placement students/apprentices in the past so understand your situation. Official training was very basic and most of the learning was on the job.
Culture
Company culture is very friendly and everyone is approachable. You can see from the office that the company treats its employees well.
Your Impressions
Enjoyed my placement on the whole however due to covid I feel like I missed out on many opportunities I would have otherwise done. The day to day job is often quite different, especially if you keep changing projects.
Yes
Make sure you choose a department you find interesting, when choosing the general engineering placement, you could end up in any area. Research the company values/conduct, this will guaranteed come up.
