Overview
Performing CFD simulations to analyze cooling systems for high performance battery packs. Feeding back information to CAD designers in order to improve thermal performance. Creating models to simulate end battery packs and validating against test data.
Skills
Developed skills in programming (MATLAB, Visual Basic), and proficiency in simulations software (Ansys Fluent/Workbench and Starccm+). Aside from skills developed in the use of tools, critical thinking and problem solving skills have also been developed significantly in my role.
Responsibilities
I was given significant responsibility in my role, with results that I was producing significantly affecting designs of future battery packs as well as gaining a better understanding of existing packs that have already been built.
Support & Guidance
I was given support and guidance directly from simulations experts from the companies who developed the software, this helped significantly in developing my skills in them. Although, there was no specific specialist in simulations on my team, there was plenty of help available when needed from outside the team.
Culture
The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly, we have regular catch up sessions with our line manager and team mates so everyone feels part of the team.
Your Impressions
The whole experience was amazing - I worked with industry specialists in simulations software and being able to learn all the best practices and insights they had, has made me into a much better engineer. Looking back to where I started, its hard to believe how much I have been able to learn and get done - it was a great experience.
Yes
Just show how passionate you are for the role you are applying to in the initial stages and do lots work outside of your studies to show it. Most of what I talked to my interviewer about were things I was doing for my engineering societies. Use the interview as a chance to ask questions - it shows how interested you are in what they are doing.
