Overview
The programme was entirely virtual due to the pandemic. Each day involved a series of talks from different people at the firm on different aspects of the firm - D&I, regional offices, employee networks etc. There was an assessed group project at the end of the week. Students were divided into groups of 3-4 and had time to prepare for the presentation in the afternoons.
Skills
Teamwork skills were the main skill that I developed. I developed this through the assessed team project. I did not develop too many other skills as there were not any other assigned tasks during the internship.
Business Insight
I learnt a lot about the firm over the course of the week, which I would not have otherwise known. There were lots of presentations given by people at the firm. I definitely feel like I have a better understanding about DLA Piper as a business and how the training contract works. Because of the sheer number of students it was often difficult to ask questions or speak to people on a one-to-one basis.
Culture
The company culture seems very welcoming and inclusive. Everyone we met seemed down to earth and approachable. It was great to see so many partners willing to speak to the students. It was especially touching that the Managing Director took the time to speak to students and answer their questions.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the experience as I feel like I learnt more about the firm, its culture, its people, and the opportunities for lawyers at the firm. Unfortunately, the format of the experience was largely the same for the entire week - a lot of talks. This was quite tiring. Also, there were a lot of students so it was hard to ask questions. It would have been nice to do some in-department work.
Yes
Be yourself. The firm seems to really value people from different backgrounds and with different interests. Demonstrate a global mindset. The firm is really international. Show an interest in working for international clients and working across jurisdictions. Highlight your entrepreneurship. The firm is very entrepreneurial and actively encourages new ideas.
