The Role
I have learned an unbelievable amount on this internship and have enjoyed getting stuck in to challenges. If I'm honest I haven't enjoyed the atmosphere a great deal and have found it a little bit difficult to engage with my fellow interns and colleagues. This is probably in part just a matter of the 'right fit' and not a reflection on the people that work here - who are all lovely.
I have been working on a few different projects with different people. On some I felt really valued, on others less so. I have also been carrying out a solo project from the start of the internship - this at times, has been a bit isolating.
The advice and support was there if I wanted it, I feel it could have been more hands on in the first few weeks just to help me settle in better. Overall it worked fine though, and there is definitely something to be said for treating an intern like a colleague.
To be honest this varied because of the nature of the work. Some days I would be hugely busy, others moved fairly slowly. Because I had an independent project though I was never short of things to do.
I was given sole responsibilty for a marketing plan and its implementation. On my more prescriptive tasks the copy I drafted was regularly used on websites and paper content.
I have finished my degree and can say that this placement has given my CV the boost it needed. It has also meant I personally feel much more confident about making applications and attending interviews. To a large extent this is because the internship has given me real tangible things to refer to and talk about.
The Company
Having done the internship if I wanted to apply for a role here I would feel very confident doing so, there were vacancies being advertised also, on a fairly regular basis.
The Culture
Went for lunch a few times with my colleagues and got to know a couple of the interns. The interns also organise fundraising events and social events amongst themselves. My feeling was that after a few weeks various groups had formed and tended to stick together.
Luckily I was able to live at home with the 'rents. Socialising in London is always fairly pricey but we found a number of decently priced restaurants/pubs nearby.
I didn't sample it to be honest. Farringdon and Old Street are nearby however for party times and Covent Garden is a 35 minute walk away. Sadlers Wells is also a two minute walk away and a lovely dance venue.
There were a variety of intern run events: pub quizzes, nights out, fundraising stuff. Generally I felt that having worked 7 hours in the office I wanted to get home asap!
