Overview
The internship consisted of 5 insightful days. The days were split into two, with interactive talks regarding the firms practise areas, pro-bono, health and wellbeing and spotlight sessions. In general, the mornings consisted of these talks and the afternoons consisted of group project work for a pitch we had to complete to a panel of partners at the end of the week. There were various opportunities to network with trainees, associates and partners. The main assessed aspect was the group project which involved getting into small groups and coming up with ideas for a pitch.
Skills
The internship enabled me to learn lots of new skills and develop existing skills, including: - confidence - teamwork - persistance and crucially (especially in our current environment), how to present myself well in a virtual nature!
Business Insight
The internship enabled me to learn about parts of the business that you would not be able to obtain externally. All aspects of the business were covered through workshops, networking and interactive Q+A's. This allowed me to build upon my knowledge of the firm to an extent that I would not have obtained from my own research. It was a truly invaluable experience.
Culture
The company culture was incredible. Throughout every session and network events, DLA Piper's values shone through. From trainee-level to partner-level and even to CEO-level, all individuals had a common vision with a welcoming presence. No question was a silly question, and all involved were willing to help with everything. Due to the virtual nature, social events were difficult, but a virtual quiz definitely made up for this.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the internship. Whilst not being able to experience specific practise group work as you would in a face-to-face environment, DLA did their upmost to ensure we obtained a wide-range of insight into the practise groups. The Graduate Recruitment team were incredibly welcoming and as mentioned above, the culture of the firm is outstanding. The internship did meet my expectations and would recommend it to all.
Yes
The main thing is to be yourself - DLA prides itself on honesty and just want to ensure you fit into the firm. Assessment centre interviews are very friendly, and more of an informal chat. In preparation for the internship, unfortunately I did not receive my schedule before the internship commenced. Perhaps this is one aspect which could be improved. The people, values and vision inspired me to apply.
