Overview
The summer internship was great! We had a mix of presentations from senior members of the firm, which demonstrated that future trainees are valued. We also had the chance to network with partners, associates and trainees from our chosen office on several occasions, which was also very useful, as it provided a deeper understanding of their practice groups. We also had a pitch group exercise - great way to interact with future colleagues.
Skills
It enhanced my understanding of how a law firm works as a business, how priorities are set, how clients are retained and relationships developed. The presentations and talks throughout the internship really contributed to this and we had a chance to put this into practice while preparing for our group pitch.
Business Insight
We had the chance to participate in drop-in calls with trainees from different offices to understand their experience as trainee solicitors, which was very useful. In turn, presentations and talks throughout the summer internship (including by the Irish and UAE offices) about different practice groups, diversity and inclusion and responsible business, really provided a fantastic insight about the way the business operates.
Culture
Very personable and down-to-earth. For example, very senior members of the firm gave us presentations and talks and were happy to answer more than the usual 2-3 questions. They made us feel very welcome and highlighted throughout that the process is very much about us deciding whether DLA Piper was a good fit for us, as much as DLA Piper deciding whether the interns are a right fit for them.
Your Impressions
It was very enjoyable! Dominique's tunes throughout the breaks in-between each session made it all the more enjoyable. The Graduate Recruitment and Development Team really designed a fantastic, packed programme that enabled us to learn a lot about the firm and to speak with members of the firm at every level, despite the fact that it was virtual.
Yes
Make sure to brush up on commercial news and understand what sets DLA Piper apart from its competitors. It's also important that you learn how a law firm operates, what clients are looking for and understand what trends affect both the law firm and its clients.
