Overview
My day-to-day tasks varied depending on what project I was working on but they all involved capturing, transforming, matching and analysing large volumes of structured and unstructured data using the latest forensic software, equipment and techniques to help our clients, understanding past challenges and proactively prevent future ones.
Skills
During my placement year, I improved on many of my soft skills. These include communication skills, working as a team, and time management. Working for a client meant I had strict deadlines to meet so it was important that I knew how to prioritise my tasks and work efficiently. My ability to use SQL, Alteryx, Tableau, Python, and PowerBI has improved greatly since starting my placement.
Responsibilities
Although my job role was Intern/trainee, I was treated as an associate and given important work to complete during my time there. I interacted directly with the client and was left to work independently on tasks, although there were always people available to help when needed.
Support & Guidance
The onboarding process was very thorough and lasted just over a month, covering a wide range of areas. I was taught how to use laptop and phone and the general pwc sites, as well as in depth training for the different software I would be using. Throughout the year there were training days and courses available to help me advance my knowledge.
Culture
PwC have put a lot of focus on employee wellbeing, making sure that they don't feel overworked or stressed. There are plenty of resources to help cope with the work from home situation. My experience in the Belfast office has been incredibly positive, the team was extremely welcoming and made me feel very comfortable. Everyone treated me with respect and made sure that I had everything I needed.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement with PwC, the skills learned and the business insight will be extremely valuable going forward in my career. I believe I will keep in contact with some of the people I have met from my team. The work is interesting and challenging, but also rewarding. The type of work is always changing so it never gets stale which I think is really important. If I am offered a post-graduate job I will happily accept the offer.
Yes
Research the department you are hoping to join before going to the interview because they appreciate you doing your own research into the kind of work you will be doing. It shows that you genuinely care about the role. The assessment centre is full on but don't overthink it, focus on the task at hand and on quality rather than quantity of work.
