Overview
There are daily presentations led by difference departments of the firm, introducing their practice area to us. The work of the day consists of any task/assignment handed by our supervisor in each of our seats (ex: research, drafting, proofreading...). There is also pro bono work and group projects taking place over the 3 weeks. Daily coffee meetings/chats with different members of the firm are usual, and social event organised by GR happen often.
Skills
Significantly developped my skills. Evidently my technical skills (ex: how to draft a memo, undertake legal reearch, present findings concisely...), but also my commercial skills (ex: undertanding clients' strategies and how HSF fits in, how to negotiate with opposing counsel in litigation...), and interpersonal skills (ex: how to address clients and different members of the firm, how to ask for help/advice...). Importantly, received very useful advice from experienced lawyers and members of the firm.
Business Insight
Its essential to understand both the client business but also how HSF works as a business itself. Talks from the CEO and PSCs gave important insights on how to strategecially grow the ifrm or a particualr department, the balance between taking on new clients (and how to choose them; pitch to them) and dedicating enough support to existing ones, the role of each member of the firm and their particular focus.
Culture
Friendly, caring, inclusive. But also when needed.
Your Impressions
Incredibly. I could never be bored because of the variety of activities and extent of exposure to different things in such a short timeframe.
Yes
Show your personality, it matters to them. Take your work but not yourself too serious. Be confident, proactive and seek out opportunities.
