Overview
As an audit associate in the Banking and Capital Markets business unit i was involved in the audit of banks. My role involved obtaining evidence from the client about qualitative and quantitative disclosures made in their financial statements. e.g. obtaining agreements, communicating with the client to understand the accounting used.
Skills
- Improved MS Office skills namely Word and Excel - Professional communication skills by talking to the client - Accounting and understanding of financial statements - Time management from working under tight deadlines and having to prioritise - Understanding of banks and their structure on a Group level
Responsibilities
Responsibility was given over smaller areas that are less significant however still help personal development and growth. However all work performed is reviewed so seniors are happy to delegate areas.
Support & Guidance
Very good support from seniors who were always happy to answer questions and solve any queries. i was very grateful and impressed with the level of coaching
Culture
I only experienced the virtual culture so this varied from team to team but the relationships within the teams were great. Outside of Covid there were many extra curricular activities such as social events and sports events however i was not able to experience much of this.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it very much as i was able to build some meaningful relationships and learn a lot on the job. My only criticism of the firm is the diversity in terms of African-Caribbean Ethnicity. I didn't think the firm was very diverse in this ethnicity which sometimes left me feeling excluded and not belonging.
Yes
This is a great way to start your career as this is a very respectful firm with great exposure to large multinational companies. The growth and development at the firm is great in terms of on the job training and professional qualifications offered (ACA for auditors) which is effectively a non-monetary payment as the firm pay for this. Be prepared to work very hard and put in long hours.
