Overview
Working on client account projects. From running workshops with clients, working on client proposals, to project management and project delivery related work. Assisting the internal sector and go-to-market team - this can be anything from industry research to general operations and analysis.
Skills
I have really developed my professional confidence over my placement, and have been able to better define what I want to peruse as a career post-university. I have had such autonomy to explore the different industries and service lines within consulting, and I have been able to gain experience in the ones that interest me most, so I can really craft my placement as my own.
Responsibilities
I was given as much responsibility as I wanted to take over my placement. I had so much autonomy to peruse different opportunities, so there's such a huge capacity at IBM to make the most of your own potential - it'a all down to how much you want to challenge yourself. I have project managed my own teams, represented IBM externally to clients, and presented in front of Senior Leadership.
Support & Guidance
A lot - although difficult within a virtual environment, I still felt well-connected with my teams
Culture
There are amazing people doing great things at IBM to prove why diversity & inclusion is so important to get right. However, there are pockets where sexism and discrimination exist. There is not a good enough reporting and support system to make junior members feel safe and comfortable to raise issues when they occur - especially when landing project-based work relies upon your professional network. This is pushing a lot of younger talent away when such behaviour is brushed aside.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed my placement, and my experience can be largely accredited to the teams I have worked with - I am always encouraged to make the most out of my placement and to take opportunities to challenge and develop myself as a young professional.
Yes
Be yourself - IBM truly value this and will allow you to flourish if you are willing to step up to opportunities and push yourself outside your comfort zone.
