Overview
During the insight, I got to meet with many patients at the hospital and talk to them about their mental health, ensuring that they were taking care of themselves in these hard times. I got to interact safely with many patients at the hospital, particularly those who would be there for a long time and might not have many visitors, and I also got to meet a lot of the staff at the hospital which was also good.
Skills
I learnt many new skills during my time there. The main skills I learnt were personal skills such as conversational skills and how to talk to people about sensitive topics such as their mental health. I also learnt more about hospitals and how they work from my time there as I never really had a real understanding of how they care for patients in the long-term. It also helped me to understand the importance of mental health.
Business Insight
I did get to see quite a few roles during my time here. However, these were mainly nursing roles as well as mental health assistants and many similar roles within the NHS that I didn't know existed. Beyond this, I did not really get to see much. This did teach me however that there are a wide range of roles within the NHS and it is possible for me to get a job here eventhough I didn't consider it first.
Culture
The company culture was very nice to see. It was always about putting the patients first and prioritising their mental health and always prioritising their wellbeing which really showed how committed everyone was to the job. There were also local community initiatives to help the mental health of older people who lived nearby and perhaps lived alone or perhaps did not have anyone to talk to and this was nice to see that they were helping people even outside the hospital.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the insight a lot. Not only did I get to meet and interact with a wide range of people, I got to talk, empathise and help them with their mental health. I was also surrounded with a great team that offered me a lot of support and also were really nice which encouraged me to do a great job and extend the welcome feeling I was given to the patients there so they could also feel better.
Yes
I would definitely advise people to not stress out too much about the interview. As long as you show that you have a genuine passion for helping people, you should be fine as this is the main quality they are looking for. I was inspired to join because I had heard about how useful this experience was and I had also recently discovered my passion for helping people and helping them feel better and how this made me feel good too.
