    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • We were given a timetable which had events on it. The events included a 1 hour lecture from each one of the departments (audit, tax, business and outsourcing, etc), with there being at least 1 representative from most (if not all) of the streams within that department. Other events included a dedicated networking session, lunch with staff, group presentation task and collaborative workshops. All of this took place on Microsoft teams and hopin.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. Through the workshops, learned how to sell myself effectively, as well as how to find roles that are best suited for me. Furthermore, through the socials and group presentation task, I developed my presentation skills as well as my team working skills (personally I'm not used to working with people who come from a different discipline). Finally, the networking session allowed me to develop my ability to network quickly and effectively.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • It was great. For example, I found out that there ate many different streams in each department which specialise in a specific task. Coming from a computer science background, I was unsure if there was anything that I would like to do within the company, but soon found out that there is a role for most disciplines (including law, chemistry, tourism, languages etc). Furthermore I found out about the company's culture and values.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Brilliant. I felt welcome and everything was pretty chill. The staff seemed like they were more than happy to be there and the candidates echoed this sentiment. The company culture is outstanding. With there being a variety of networks (networks are clubs/scocieties) started and ran by employees which cover things like sports and religion. Furthermore, BDO takes employee health (both mental and physical) very seriously, with the company encouraging employees to be themselves.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The insight was invaluable and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. The week taught me so much about BDO as a firm, the employees who work there, as well as accountancy. Furthermore, I was able to meet some amazing people (both candidates and staff) as well as receive a free box of merchandise!

  • 7. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO
  • What BDO values the most is you. From more personal things such as your values to things such as your hopes for the future. BDO is a firm which will put you and your wellbeing first. However, they will not tolerate anyone who does not echo this (ie anyone who is not willing to accept someone for something such as the religion they practice or their background/history).
