Overview
My role involved integrating with various channels and stakeholders on a day-to-day basis. From developing marketing calendars and creating sales reports internally, to then optimising our brands with key e-retail accounts, my role required excellent communication skills, and provided a balance between being creative and analytical.
Skills
Learning is really encouraged at L'Oréal. Not only was I able to learn new skills that were required for the operational side of my work, I attended trainings with various internal and external stakeholders to learn about tools and functions that can be leveraged within the business. As well as my soft skills being developed organically throughout, Coursera provided me with a platform to expand my studies of niche modules for personal development.
Responsibilities
The extent of autonomy I was given far exceeded my expectations. L'Oréal really encourage their employees to harness a great sense of entrepreneurship, as embedded within their 5 competencies. Becoming the go-to person for all E-com related queries for the brands, as well as creating, briefing and implementing strategy with specific E-retail accounts, my high level of responsibility enabled me to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Support & Guidance
Although over half of my placement year was facilitated virtually, both HR and my colleagues were persistent in ensuring that I had the necessary support to excel in my work. Although entrepreneurship and autonomous learning is heavily harnessed, there was not a moment where I would feel criticised for asking a question. The resources available to support me in both the present and future, were more than adequate in both quality, and quantity.
Culture
L'Oreal's culture can be perceived as very autonomous, however, with great autonomy comes great entrepreneurship. Harnessing entrepreneurship effectively requires you to integrate with all functions, of which I was constantly doing. In doing so, I was able to participate in a lot of teamwork led projects, and also learn, and in some cases teach, throughout the process. The general atmosphere is pleasant, contemporary and social.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement! The opportunity to learn so much and also network with a vast amount of functions and senior levels of management, has played a vital role in starting my career as a marketeer. As well as being one of the world's largest beauty companies, L'Oréal is a company obsessed with marketing, and they ensure that their employees are up to date with all of the latest consumer trends.
Yes
Be yourself. Individuality is key with a company like L'Oréal, and it is a trait that you will be recognised and remembered for. Additionally, really take advantage of all of the networking opportunities that come your way. No matter how small or large the interaction may be with a stakeholder, that interaction can go a long way in developing trust.
