    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked across a number of teams during my placement year, it was important to me to get a breadth of knowledge of eCommerce during my time with Matalan. Some daily tasks involved: updating spreadsheets with daily marketing expenditure, generating and developing discount codes for 3rd parties, visually merchandising website pages relative to sales and stock, collecting and organising customer feedback, completing competitor analysis.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • My skills on Excel have been developed, I also now know how to operate a number of eCommerce platforms relative to my job. Other skills that have also been improved on include: Communication, teamwork, presenting, confidence and knowledge about the eCommerce industry.

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, on some teams, more responsibility was given than it was for other teams but regardless, I always felt like I had a good level of responsibility throughout this placement.

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • A lot of support was provided during my time here, and had I felt the need to ask for any more support - i'm sure the accessibility of that support would of been easy. Everyone wants to help!

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture was great and the atmosphere a really positive one. I was involved in a good amount of virtual events as we weren't able to attend any physical ones due to Covid-19. Colleagues often checking in and always feeling involved.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement! I feel like i've learnt so much and can't wait to apply this to my final year of university as well as my future working life. I feel super lucky to have worked for Matalan as an eCommerce Intern and now have a clear view on the direction I want to head in after I have graduated!

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Matalan
  • Just be yourself! Research the company ahead of your interview and be confident in yourself. There are a lot of free, short online courses you can do ahead of applying that are relative to eCommerce and that will really help your CV stand out - don't be afraid to get creative and go that extra mile.
