Overview
As a whole, I have three buckets of responsibility: 1. Running customer deployments of our product. (Like the rest of my team, but fewer orders) 2. Leading our internal ticketing system. This includes taking on miscellaneous internal and customer requests myself, or allocating them to an appropriate resource. 3. Owning and pushing forward multiple 'Business Analyst' type projects, to improve our internal systems. The scope of these projects generally span multiple departments.
Skills
I learned and developed a multitude of skills: 1. Through experience, I dramatically increased my industry specific knowledge, and cultivated pointers to my personal strengths and weaknesses. 2. I now also have a greater ability to understand a business, and successfully read its requirements. 3. Through multiple opportunities, I was able to become more comfortable delivering impactful presentations. 4. As I was responsible for an important internal function, this allowed me to develop my assertiveness skills.
Responsibilities
I was given immense responsibility during my placement. This was extremely advantageous as this led to some of my work being very consequential, which will not only leave a lasting impact on the company, but allowed me to have a taste of projects I wouldn't traditionally think a placement student would get involved with; being in this position has been excellent for my self development.
Support & Guidance
Professionally, the first few months of my specific experience were relatively slow on this front, however the introduction of a dedicated mentor, and other new candidates, helped aid my experience. The existing support and training in place were more catered to engineers who had been working for a while, and needed a quick refresher. This has however since been addressed. Personally, my line managers were extremely approachable, and I met some incredible people on my team who were happy to chat, or help with work, alike.
Culture
From my experience, Egress has a rather neutral atmosphere. I found it to be autonomous, but of course with the expectation to get things done to the best of their ability. There’s also a very strong focus on customer satisfaction. On top of this, there's always charity and diversity events for people to get involved with if they like.
Your Impressions
Great experience in general. A lot of the work was rewarding and fell into my skill set, and I had the pleasure of being surrounded by a fantastic team. To be honest, I didn't fully know what to expect from a 'Professional Services' role, but it, and my surrounding areas of focus, exceeded my expectations. I would return to Egress.
Yes
If you haven't had any experience in Professional Services before, brace yourself; you don't just have to have a good understanding of the tech side of things (which, despite being a techie, I mainly leaned on the job), but you also have to be a masterful communicator. Joining Professional Services at Egress in your placement year will likely feel intense, but I implore you to stick it out, work hard, and be proactive in becoming the best engineer you can, and you'll get the most out of what any internship experience can offer.
