    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The EY Summer Internship should have been a 6-week long internship in the office, however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it had to be shortened to just 2 weeks, and run virtually. A Case Study element gave us the chance to work in small groups with other interns in our service line (some in the same office, some in a different office) and prepare a short group presentation for an EY graduate mentor.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Coming from a science background, I had little knowledge of the world of accounting and finance and so this was a great opportunity to learn and understand more about that. I also learnt a lot about EY as a company, including the graduate programme, employee benefits, EY's ethos and values etc.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Not really, as the Case Study was the only element where we really had to contribute, and the company we were doing this for was made-up. So we didn't have a lot of responsibility, but this was also quite nice and it meant there was little pressure on us and allowed us to focus on our own growth as well as enjoying it.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • We had lots of support and guidance from lots of different people throughout the internship. Most notably, we had a mentor (a 3rd-year graduate) assigned to our group for the Case Study work who could answer any questions we had and generally help us. We also had a buddy (a 2nd-year graduate) who was there just for a general chat and to answer any non-case-study related questions we had.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Great, all employees that we heard from were very passionate about their roles and about EY and really seemed to agree with the company values. There was a lot of emphasis placed on diversity and inclusion, which I thought was great, and also on an appropriate work-life balance and the importance of taking care of your mental and physical well-being.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship, I thought it was an appropriate length of time given it was virtual and we still covered a range of topics which helped me to develop my knowledge. It was also a great chance to network, as we were all using the same EY-specific platform, where you could upload your LinkedIn profile URL to connect with other interns.

  • 7. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • Research the company and your service line, and know what you're talking about. Be yourself and be friendly. Be honest if you're unsure how to answer a question. Take time to complete the application process, it is quite long! But it is so worth it.
