The Role
Working at Cancer Research UK was amazing and the best job I have ever had! I enjoyed it so much and would definitely recommend others to undertake an internship with this charity!
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues at Cancer Research UK, I felt that my opinions were taken into consideration even if they weren't implemented. Just knowing that your opinions are important is a great feeling.
The level of support I received was incredible, from day 1 my mentor made me feel comfortable and provided me with the right guidance necessary for me.
When I first started my internship I wasn't extremely busy, however, as my internship progressed this definitely changed and I always had various tasks to complete. At times I felt I was really busy and I did feel slighlty under pressure, having said that the support I received from my fellow colleagues was amazing and I did enjoy this challenge.
I was given A LOT of responsibility during my internship, more than I could of imagined! Having this responsibility made me feel part of my team and gave me a sense of belonging and importance. I loved the amount of responsibility I was given and appreciated how important the work I was doing was to the rest of my team and the organisation.
The amount which I have learnt while undertaking an internship with Cancer Research UK is unbelieveable. I have learnt so much about myself and the way I work with others in a team. In my opinion, the fundamental skills which I believe have definitely developed is my organisational and communication skills, and I will carry these improvements forward with me into future jobs.
The Company
I loved the atmosphere in the office, working in an open plan office was fantastic! This really gave me the opportunity to interact with other employess from across the organisaiton, which is something I believe was key to driving my communication skills.
The internship was really organised and thought through. It was evident that past comments and feedback was taken on board to make the intership experience that much better and organised for future interns.
My personal development was taken into consideration by my mentor, and I was constantly being asked what I would like to develop/improve on and these comments were taken on board, as I would participate in activities/tasks which would help me to achieve this.
Employment prospects are good, but it really depends on what career you want to pursue. There are more vacancies advertised within certain departments than others which will benefit more people, whereas vacancies in other departments aren't as available.
The Culture
The social scene in my internship intake was perfect, we all got along really well!
The cost of socialising was decent, not too expensive, but you have to choose the right places to go to, to find a bargain within your budget!
There were SO many out of office volunteering opportunities to immerse yourself in and really develop key skills!!
