Overview
I sat in the Real Estate Disputes team for my scheme and was given tasks and projects by the department to work on in the short and long term over 2 weeks. Each morning of the scheme 1-2 talks were organised by Graduate Recruitment to give us an insight into working at the firm and the various departments.
Skills
I learnt how law departments interact on a day to day basis and communicate with each other particularly with working virtually. I learnt how to serve light obstruction notices and how a case management conference is run. I also learnt how to take a schedule for a witness statement. I developed my client facing skills through drafting letters and emails.
Business Insight
A real effort was made by Graduate Recruitment to run a variety of talks throughout the 2 weeks to give a real insight into all departments - these were very helpful and interactive. Further, my department encouraged me asking questions and interacting with people outside of my team. Everyone was extremely giving of their time.
Culture
The company made a real effort to be open about their culture and diversity initiatives. Everyone I came into contact with at all levels within the firm was friendly and supportive. I was also invited to join a Junior Gender Representation group meeting which was extremely inclusive and insightful.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight scheme. I felt that it was well structured and I always felt supported and part of the team. I was given proper tasks to complete which made me feel valued, and a notable effort was made to give a real overview as to working at the firm.
Yes
I would advise to research the firm and make an effort to attend the many events the firm does run prior to applying. It is important to interact and ask questions prior to making an application to make sure that you understand the culture and work that they undertake.
