Overview
The virtual internship was mainly focused on a group project which involved a report and presentation at the end. Therefore, the day-to-day tasks were mainly focused around this and meeting with your group, researching, forming a strategy and meeting with the relevant people in the company. However, throughout the internship there were also various learning activities and events which ranged from hearing about the company's strategy and growth areas to hearing from employee networks about the culture they are creating.
Skills
Given the group project focus I have definitely developed on my ability to work in an effective team. Also through this project I learnt a lot about the energy sector and developed knowledge in this field that I did not previously have. Furthermore, I improved my skills in using Powerpoint and Excel. As well as my communication skills since we had a training course in how to communicate effectively.
Business Insight
It was very interesting learning about the multiple companies that come under Centrica as well as hearing from lots of different people about their role in the company and in my case often their marketing role as I did not realise how broad and how many options within marketing there are.
Culture
The company culture is really great. We had socials organised every week with our streams and we were also encouraged to have coffee breaks with our project groups. As well as this, we also had talks from VOICE (Valuing our Identity, Culture & Ethnicity), the CWN Centrica Women's Network, Diverse-ability network and Spectrum (Centrica's LGBTQ+ network).
Your Impressions
Although working virtually has it challenges, the support was great and overall, I loved the virtual internship. I really enjoyed learning more about the energy sector and I found the project I was given really interesting. I also got on really well with the people in my team as well as the people on my stream. I would definitely go back!
Yes
I would advise you to have good company knowledge going into the interview process/ assessment centre. Mainly, I would just advise you to think why you would like to work for Centrica and just relax and enjoy the process as everyone is really friendly!
