    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role involved working in a team in corporate and commercial Scotland but all the interns were in different teams. I did lots of different jobs and attended lots of meetings, the nature of tasks really depends on how much your manager wants to interact with you. I did lots of research on companies and their accounts before meetings with them, wrote up the income the portfolio made and used excel matrices to assess companies.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • My excel skills have improved and my technical skills have got better with working from home. Most of all, my communication skills have improved by being thrown in the deep end to talk to many people across the bank who I don't know. I've grown my network largely and made lots of new friends. My presentation skills have also improved and I have a much better understanding of what the bank and my team does.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Not major responsibility as we were working remotely which makes it harder. It depends on the manager. Some people in my team invited me to customer meetings and I got the chance to ask them questions and plan what I was going to say whereas in other meetings, I just observed. I did get responsibility to do a few tasks but always got help and guidance and could ask any questions which was great.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Lots. My manager was always there for me and I could ask him anything. The support from my buddy who is 5 years older than me was also fab. I really feel I could ask him anything and he gave me loads of tips in how to do well and what to say in my interview for the permanent job. Everyone in my team was great also especially the grad who looked out for me.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Not being in the office is harder to assess this but everyone was really open and always encouraged me to ask them questions and reach out to them. No one was scary and there was a very open and inclusive atmosphere- I wasn't really afraid of messing up.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I loved it. It was very well structured so you rarely were thinking what you should be doing. Being online was hard as there are always technical difficulties but everyone experienced these. There wasn't lots of pressure put on me and we were encouraged to enjoy ourselves and not stress ourselves out. I've learned so much and so many skills and I'd definitely recommend a NatWest internship.
