Overview
Optimised reactions in routes to several key intermediates across several MedChem projects by application of High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE). This would involve assessing the previous attempts at the reaction by the requesting chemist, and combined with review of the literature and my own knowledge to plan and carry out parallel screens to access the viability of different ligands, catalysts, solvents, bases and other reaction conditions.
Skills
It has completely changed my approach to practical and synthetic chemistry by exposing me to the considerations that determine what makes a chemical reaction viable at various stages of the drug discovery process. It has massively augmented my knowledge of chemical transformations and practical organic chemistry, as well as allowing me the opportunity to speak with and learn from professional chemists.
Responsibilities
Yes, after the initial training and oversight to ensure i was carrying out practical work safety and effectively, much of the screening work and planning I did was off the back of my own research and left for me to organise. However my supervisor was always available to discuss my plans and suggest improvements if he thought they were necessary.
Support & Guidance
I received the appropriate amount of support, I felt I was supported enough when I needed help but not so much that I had no freedom
Culture
Created a real positive environment in which I could learn and ask questions, everyone was willing to talk about their work
