Overview
Members of the team would brief me on projects/developments they were working on, followed by an e-mail and I would work on the tasks that were set such as drafting planning appraisals or covering letters to be sent with a planning application. There were also daily departmental zooms giving an insight into other departments at Savills.
Skills
I've discovered how Planning is very much "learn-on-the-job" and I've become accustomed to certain Planning Policies and the procedure of submitting large scale applications. I also learnt more about the APC process. I developed my writing when producing planning documents and had to ensure I adopted the right tone.
Business Insight
It was reassuring to learn that there are recognised, established pathways to gaining a professional accreditation such as from the RTPI. I appreciated the discussions with other departments and how they are all inter-connected and the placement has also encouraged me to gain more experience in other areas such as Local Authorities.
Culture
It seems that the company is very supportive towards its graduates and it seems that colleagues can turn to one another (even the most experienced) to pose questions and solutions.
Your Impressions
I felt very honoured to be working with such a recognised brand and it was reassuring to get feedback to say that I was helping the team with projects. I enjoyed the productive nature of the placement as you are not simply shadowing.
Yes
Be confident in asking the Directors questions as they have a wealth of experience and shows your interest in the department.
