    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I'm a project manager. So I'm responsible for a feature that we're developing in technology, and its my job to plan, track and update the project - ensuring people know what they need to do and help them to collaborate with the right people to solve problems. I lead two stand up meetings every week to update the progress of tasks we're doing, and interact with people from across the business.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have become more proficient with using teams, word and excel, as well as learning to use our project management tool Aha which allows us to track work and link it into the relevant feature, and create pivot charts and roadmaps. I have developed my ability to plan and track projects - including RAGing tasks risks and dependencies, creating Gantt charts and summarising meeting notes., and to communicate efficiently with people. I have also learnt how to install software onto tills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I am project managing the development of a feature which is going live to tills and every customer will come into contact with. That said I also receive the support I need to keep things on track. Moreover, alongside my main role I have been entrusted with setting up the software on test tills - again given the appropriate help where needed.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Any time I haven't been able to do something or have struggled to bring people together I have had the guidance and advice to get me through it. People at the company are more than happy to explain things and share their experience.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture is very supportive - we are encouraged to be ourselves and not change for the working environment. An example of this is the dress code, which is largely flexible and its up to the individual what they was to wear. The general atmosphere is hard working but relaxed, people are happy to have a joke but also don't waste time. We have an hour every day to devote to lunch and wellbeing which is good for mental health and gives us networking time.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Tesco plc
  • The assessment centre and interviews are tough but if you're well prepared and confident in yourself then you have every chance. For day one you don't need to do anything special except for getting into the right head space to start as you mean to go on because the internship doesn't last long. I was inspired to join because Tesco is the UKs biggest retailer and my job role means I get to meet and collaborate with people from across the business.
