Overview
Within the investment stream, I worked with the equities team. I researched companies within my region and undertook financial analysis - looking at their competitive advantages over competitors and analysing their financial statements. I joined in during management calls to encourage ESG best practices. I join in during meetings and often take the minutes or I do write ups from management meetings or investor education calls.
Skills
Note taking efficiently - the calls go very quickly and so highlighting the important information is key. Presenting - having to present to my team and senior members about companies I've researched.
Responsibilities
Yes - from the first day on the internship I was put into an important IPO call and took notes that were distributed to the entire team. Since then my responsibilities have increased where I research 2/3 companies in detail and so they're under my coverage.
Support & Guidance
There has been great support from my buddy, line manager, HR, other interns, and even members on my regional equities desk.
Culture
Welcoming - they encourage asking questions. Even senior investment directors ask questions that they state aren't "advanced" just so they can fully understand a company from the bottom up. Everyone is happy to help and they're invested in your progression over the 10 weeks.
Your Impressions
I've thoroughly enjoyed my internship. I have learnt a lot from it - commercial awareness wise but also from a personal perspective. They have staff at the company who have been here for 10-20+ years and are really friendly and welcoming.
Yes
abrdn has a legacy of impact investing and ESG so look into those kind of segments if you're interested.
