Overview
The role involves lots of research, design and experimentation of new technologies using prototype rigs. Once enough data has been collected, a recommendation is then put forward on whether or not the technology should continue. Conversations like this are happening on a daily basis in the company and it is always insightful to be a part of them.
Skills
I have had a great chance to develop my project management and communication skills whilst on my placement year. One of the main ways in which I improved my communication skills this year was by taking part in an external training course provided by BAT which covered 2 whole days and I found to be very useful. There has also been mindfulness training company wide that lasted 10 weeks.
Responsibilities
During my placement, the responsibility has very much been on me to report back the findings I gather from my technologies as I am the person who is working the closest with it and therefore knows it the best. This confidence in me has been shown consistently throughout my placement as well as trust to make large decisions on where to move projects going forward.
Support & Guidance
During the entirety of the year there has always been guidance and support on offer. There is a mentorship scheme at BAT where you are assigned a mentor who will guide you through your career/time at BAT and help provide you with useful business insights.
Culture
The company culture is an incredibly positive one with a general feeling that you can speak up about anything and start an important conversation. Additionally there are lots of opportunities to chat to people as there are plenty of social and sports clubs to join and be a part of, generally adding to the overall positive experience.
Your Impressions
I have thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to work in such a positive and open minded team during my time on placement. It has far exceeded my expectations for what it could have been and given the opportunity I would love to come back!
Yes
Just be yourself in every interview process you go through and make sure that you show how much you want to work for this company, or how much you want to get involved. Generally, in BAT, your energy will be reflected back to you. So if you show interest and excitement, that is what you will get in return.
