Overview
We had a week long introduction session. (2 days firm wide introduction, followed by 2 days service line specific). My first project involved a lot of project management creating budget trackers, availability trackers and risk trackers. Additionally, I was tasked with setting up Google Meets, emailing other team members and leading an introduction session between the three Pwc teams from the UK, Germany and US. On my second project I was involved in client meetings and formatting documents.
Skills
I have been able to greatly develop my interpersonal skills over the last six weeks by arranging meetings with PwC employees from different areas of the firm to find out more about what they do in their line of service. My presentational skills have also been developed through training and delivering two presentations, similarly I have vastly improved my communication skills through email and on video calls. I have also been able to learn a lot more about consulting in general.
Responsibilities
During my first project I was given a lot of responsibility that allowed me to lead a meeting with senior management. Some of the slides I created were also shown in the Kick Off meeting with the client. PwC places a strong emphasis on shaping your own career and this meant I was able to take responsibility for arranging meetings to find out more about different pathways and how I could get involved with them upon returning as a graduate.
Support & Guidance
Everyone at the firm was extremely helpful and able to answer any questions I had. There was no feeling of hierarchy and I felt I could approach anyone no matter their level of management. There was also a great deal of resources available for mental health and wellbeing and we were assigned both a buddy and a career coach who we had weekly meetings with to check in on our progress and just find out how we were getting on.
Culture
Having read stories about the Big Four I was surprised just how much PwC lived up to its company values and placed a real emphasis on people. There was a very friendly atmosphere and people would come over to chat and find out how things were going, there was also a level of trust that allows people to get on with their work without micromanagement. We also had social events and went to the pub together after work a few times and went for lunch.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my time at PwC. I felt the internship was delivered really well especially given the circumstances with Covid-19. We were able to go into the office or work from home and take advantage of Summer Working Hours were we could finish early on a Friday- provided we had met the required weekly hours (37.5) and our project demands allowed this. The internship provided me a brilliant insight into the firm and I would definitely go back!
Yes
The first stage to the application process is the online tests, these were different for PwC than other firms and took place on PwCs App and were similar to a brain training exercise so I feel there isn't much preparation there. In terms of the online video interview make sure you get used to speaking to a screen with no one on the other side. For the assessment centre my biggest tips are time management and preparing questions for your interview that show you have really researched the role.
