Overview
Working on a range of projects, some individually that are for my specific placement, others as a group with my fellow intern cohort. I also help out with general tasks that need to be done in my team, in addition to these larger projects. I spend time using online resources provided by the bank to aid my personal development which they encourage quite a lot.
Skills
I have learnt basic coding from an online course I have taken. I have also strongly developed my interpersonal and presentational skills; this was from a range of factors - 1) talks given to us by educational speakers 2) from help and advice given from online learning resourses 3) delivering 4 presentations to key stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given a project to help inform future decisions on how one of the insurance product could be marketed to students with the intention that these changes get implemented after I leave. I was also behind several updates to the official HSBC website page and made changes in how they deliver financial education sessions to young people in schools.
Support & Guidance
A great deal. I had a main line manager to report to who was very helpful and always made time for me, especially when I was finding my feet in the beginning. We were also given a 'grad coach' who was someone on the grad scheme who could help us from a different perspective as they were in a similar situation not so long ago. We also had another OPM manager to go to.
Culture
Really supportive and inclusive. People always made time for me if I had questions or wanted to speak to them (even quite senior members in the bank). I was not shouted at or told off for making mistakes and instead told how to improve in future by learning from them.
Your Impressions
Very much so. I developed a lot personally and will feel confident going into a full time role in future. Even though it was from home, much effort was made to allow me to interact with fellow interns, several of whom I now have quite strong personal relationships with.
Yes
Don't be nervous or worried - everyone is very nice, you wont be overworked, the work will be challenging but rewarding.
