Overview
About half the day would be filled with meetings with team members, clients and stakeholders within the banks. For the rest of the day I would work on both intern and placement projects which involved data analysis, personal development and networking.
Skills
Yes, there was a huge emphasis on soft skill development. I attended several HSBC university courses as well as the weekly workshops provided by the intern team. I have noticed an improvement in my presentation skills, teamwork and analytical skills to name a few. It is hard to believe so much development can happen in just 8 weeks!
Responsibilities
I created numerous reports on sales trends which were used by key stakeholders. In meetings, my ideas were taken seriously and I felt like a valued member of team. The internship hit the right balance between supporting me and allowing me to work independently.
Support & Guidance
There were numerous lines of support including grads and senior leaders. There was a large focus on wellbeing both in the induction and throughout the internship. I come from a science background so I was nervous that I would not have enough finance-specific knowledge. However, HSBC provided me with all the educational tools needed and I felt comfortable to ask questions.
Culture
The culture was so different from what I expected but in the best possible way. I attended numerous talks on diversity and inclusion, led by both the intern programme and the wider bank. Everyone I met in the bank was so welcoming and kind. It was a fantastic working environment.
Your Impressions
I had a brilliant time at HSBC. I met so many interesting and lovely people and had the opportunity to get involved in so many different initiatives. I wish I could do 8 more weeks!
Yes
In my experience, HSBC really value different perspectives and fresh thinking. Therefore, if you come from a non-finance degree it is still so worth applying for the internship. An interest in current affairs and increasing your commercial awareness is what is important, not necessarily a finance degree!
