    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I work in Internal Audit within NatWest and was given at the start of the internship various projects to work on with other interns or by myself which had deadlines towards the end of the internship. I also took on smaller tasks for my line manager mainly involving Excel.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I believe my communication skills have greatly increased as I have to reach out to different people within the bank to get information for the various projects I work on. Also my ability to manage multiple deadlines and juggle various tasks has significantly got better.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given responsibility to work around my own deadlines remotely without being checked up on and so in that sense I was given quite a lot of independent responsibility.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I recieved a lot of support and guidance from my line manager as well as the early careers team. The early careers team organised a lot of talks and presentations from senior members within the bank and external speakers which were really insightful and engaging to listen to. Also, when I was struggling with a project after reaching out to the individual running it I recieved great help and feedback which was greatly beneficial.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • In my opinion NatWest is a very relaxed and friendly company to work at, where people are always welcome in spending time helping you learn something new or when you are struggling with something. Members on my team who I spoke to also agreed with my opinion that the company doesn't feel that heirarchical but instead is very open to discussion where senior management can be approached by junior members of a team.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship at NatWest. I learnt a lot, built a lot of strong connections with those who worked at the bank and other interns. I think that the Early Careers team did a great job of providing projects for interns to work on which provided meaningful learning opportunities without overburdening us with tasks. My only issue would be that I think they could have taken the time to organise in person social events now that covid restrictions are fully relaxed.

  • 7. Would you recommend NatWest Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to NatWest Group
  • To look on their website at the values and purpose of the company. Get an understanding of the various divisions within the bank and their sizes (look at the yearly or half year report for context). Also important to look at are the behaviours that NatWest look for in their employees which can also be found on their website and to be able to give examples where you have displayed these behaviours.
