Overview
Working in Digital within UK WPB. I worked in the innovation and partnerships team and I had to develop recommendations for the team. My day-to-day included networking with people across digital and other areas of the bank, data research, researching the market, carrying out surveys and gathering insight, attending development talks and banking talks. I also had to create a presentation for a Employee resource group and raise money for Mind.
Skills
I have learnt how to efficiently research data and get a rich understanding of the current banking market. I have developed my presentation skills and managing a project from the research phase to presenting. I have improved my excel skills and powerpoint skills. I have developed my networking skills, being able to talk to various stakeholders, even at senior levels and ask them different questions.
Responsibilities
Management of my own project, developing my own research method and direction of the project. Given autonomy to connect with people across the business.
Support & Guidance
Daily check-in with line manager, and whole team very supportive. Weekly check-in with a grad (gradcoach). For employee resource project, we had a grad sponser who offered a lot of guidance. Overall the whole of HSBC was very supportive - wanting you to succeed
Culture
very inclusive - lots of intern talks on diversity and inclusion. Part of internship was getting involved in an employee resource project to drive inclusion, also had to volunteer for a charity for a day and raise money for mind. Big drive on helping interns understand the sustainable goals of the bank.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship, particularly the exposure I had to several different areas of the bank and the inclusive culture of the different stakeholders I met. something that stood out for me was the enthusiasm of senior stakeholders to take time out to chat through things. The work challenged me but was also very interesting, giving me a good basis for furthering my career.
Yes
Be yourself. Ask questions, don't be afraid of asking the wrong question. Be confident in networking with others, they want to hear your opinion.
