Overview
I worked as an investments intern working on day to day ad-hoc tasks whilst also completing wider internship length main projects.
Skills
Developed new technical skills in software such as Bloomberg and Eikon whilst enhancing existing skills in excel through early careers led sessions and self driven training programs.
Responsibilities
I was given responsibility in both day to day tasks and overall wider projects. I had the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that was used immediately by the investments teams.
Support & Guidance
The support structures were well established: I had regular contact with my graduate stream head, line manager, graduate buddy and the other interns. Those who I reached out to for guidance throughout the business were also incredibly forthcoming with their time.
Culture
The general atmosphere was great and the people at the firm are really interesting however the wider company culture is slightly behind the times - the IT systems at the firm were frankly terrible and this had a really negative impact on my day to day, yet nobody seemed particularly engaged in resolving these issues.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the placement a lot however this was largely driven by personal determination to get as much out of it as possible - active engagement in organising networking, development sessions, after work drinks, taking on projects for the team was critical in my enjoyment.
Yes
Apply as early as possible and make sure you research the team that you are interested in joining, being clear about your motivations to join a team that you are particularly interested in.
