Overview
Develop useful software that works towards a major project. The day starts with a stand-up and discussing our tasks for the day, before breaking off and getting to work on our task. Other meetings may be held, to talk through the project, your task, or just as a general check in. I offer myself to my colleagues when not busy, to try and help them accomplish their work.
Skills
This placement was more front-end based, whereas I have learnt more backend. As such I have learnt a lot about HTML, CSS and JS, and have successfully designed an advanced web page. I undertook the PSM 1 course, which taught me about Scrum and how to be a Scrum Master. I undertook the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam and course, which taught me about the Amazon Cloud , and how it can be used
Responsibilities
I helped Scrum Masters to run retros, and daily stand-ups which was intimidating but not as scary as I was expecting. I managed applicants to a leadership course, being first point of contact, leading to lots of decision making and emails being sent to a multitude of colleagues - many of which were much more senior than I was
Support & Guidance
I had weekly catch-ups with my line manager, and catch-ups with the team leads twice a week, where I was able to offer my help to them Any issue was sorted with a quick skype call or chat, and I never felt like I was asking a stupid question. The patience shown to me was exemplary
Culture
So many events were run for interns, graduates and the company as a whole. There was a project BBQ, sports clubs for the office, and lots of "water-cooler" talk about our lives outside of work. The culture is terrific, and is one I truly hope to be a part of upon graduation
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it an awful lot! It has taught me so much and gained me qualifications and network connections I will have for life. The company culture is lovely, and one which made me feel instantly welcome. I'd most certainly return to BAE Systems AI
Yes
Get stuck in! Everyone will bend over backwards to help you, so just ask! Join clubs, social events, coffee chats - its incredible to join a large meeting and recognise 5/6 people, really makes you feel at home and that you are valued! Never be afraid to ask for anything, the worse they can say is no, and the best they can offer is unlimited possibilities!
