Overview
The "Fire Engineering" role at Arup provides different tasks on a day-to-day basis. Some of them: 1. Writing fire strategy reports for different client projects and give different fire engineering solutions up to 4 to 5 RIBA stage. 2. Completing fire strategy mark-ups which goes through series of check before being sent off to architects. 3. Visit site for testing and ensuring fire strategies are met. 4. Researching materials and products on behalf of company to improve fire engineering solution. 4. There are other task opportunity that could arise during the internship, such as carrying out different internal projects for the company. This could be initiating an event, programming software's for engineers, arranging internal meetings etc. Pros: 1. Decent salary for an internship 2. Varying task to keep you interested 3. Flexible job schedules 4. Opportunity to work from home (During COVID - 19) Cons: 1. Often time difficult to interact with staff members during remote working days (Due to COVID - 19).
Skills
Learnt: 1. Learnt how to do mark-ups and fire engineering strategy. 2. Learnt about fire engineering solutions and strategy, Eg "Means of warning and escape", "Internal fire spread (linings)", "Internal fire spread (structure)", External fire spread" and "Access and facilities for the fire service". 3. Learnt how to do mark-ups and fire engineering strategy. 4. Mailing, writing fee proposal and understanding business strategy. 5. New Excel skills such as using add-ons and simple coding. 6. Programming skills: Using VS Code, C#, Git lab and Design Check 2 (Not a usual task) Improved upon: 1. Researching skills 2. Identifying key components in different guidelines used by the company. 3. Organize time and plan for the day. 4. Communicate effectively.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot responsibility during this placement.
Support & Guidance
Most of the senior members were busy and a lot of staff members on holiday during the summer placement. Sometimes I did miss on the support.
Culture
Very friendly. The company's west branch had coffee break time half an hour a day. Those moment helps to socialize and often tackles with problem that you may have at work place.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it most of the time. Very good for people who wants to experience what an office life would feel like.
Yes
Be knowledgeable about the company including some of its history and philosophy. Know about Ove Arup. Work at your pace but be careful of any oncoming deadlines. Please feel free to ask colleagues for help when needed.
