Overview
My role was in the Sustainable Bonds team where I worked on client pitches, drafting Frameworks for a client issuance, investor engagement, ESG ratings analysis and company strategy analysis
Skills
I have learnt a lot about sustainability, especially through the lens of finance. I have also learnt hard skills, notably concerning debt capital markets such as bond pricing, pitching etc., as well as knowledge and understanding of the more broader Investment Banking. Furthermore, my technical skills in Microsoft ppnt and excel have improved significantly. In terms of soft skills, I have consolidated my teamwork and communication skills.
Responsibilities
Yes, my team was very busy and understaffed so I was given responsibility for carrying out numerous important tasks on a daily basis.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance. Whenever I asked questions, they were always answered promptly and thoroughly and people were always keen to help out and support my development
Culture
The culture was great. Despite being virtual most of the time, I still got a sense that everyone was looking out for each other and keen to support one another all the time. It is hard to comment on the general atmosphere given being virtual, but HSBC is definitely team-orientated and collaborative and thrives off its diverse and talented workforce
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship. I developed transferable skills whilst also gaining key industry specific knowledge that I will use throughout any financial career. I was always treated with respect, and never inferior and I thoroughly enjoyed the responsibility I was given in terms of my workload.
Yes
I would advise others to really understand Hsbc as an institution before applying, as well as have a genuine interest that you can talk about comfortably about precisely what you are applying for
