Overview
As part of the Finance Internship with Tesco, I worked with the Telecoms team on a project which looked at the success of Tesco Mobile Stores when they have (and haven't) been 'refreshed'.
Skills
The project was very excel-heavy, and I initially had very limited excel knowledge. However with the help of my manager (and youtube!), I developed my excel skills up to a suitable level to work on my project successfully. Additionally, I presented a lot, both virtually and in-person which was very beneficial to me and I'm sure it will continue to be in future.
Responsibilities
Yes! I was able to work on my own project, deciding my own priorities and focusses. Of course, I regularly checked in with my manager to ensure that I was on the right track, but I felt very much responsible for my own work which is a positive.
Support & Guidance
I received an abundance of support and guidance through the internship; mostly from my manager, but also from fellow interns, a number of grads, as well as other senior colleagues too. I always felt like I could reach out to someone whenever I needed to, no matter how silly my question was.
Culture
Faultless. It sounds cliche', but everyone genuinely was so supportive, understanding and helpful when it came to personal and work-related issues. Everyone I came across genuinely seemed keen to help in any way that they could, and most importantly, everyone seemed proud of their individual roles at Tesco.
Your Impressions
10/10! It was a great experience, and it enabled me to get so much exposure to a variety of areas within the business. The work was enjoyable, the team was incredibly supportive, and you never felt like you couldn't speak to someone, despite the internship being almost wholly virtual. I initially thought that 10 weeks sounded ages, but it absolutely flew by and I know I'll miss it when I leave.
Yes
Do it! It's a great opportunity to get your foot in the door at an absolutely massive business. You have to obviously take the opportunity in both hands yourself, as if you don't work hard then you won't get anything out of it. But ultimately I'd encourage anyone to apply, and then once you're here, make sure you ask every question that comes to mind!
