Overview
I completed a series of hypothetical tasks. This involved research tasks, summarising case law and writing letters to clients and lawyers. I met with my supervisor each day to catch up on my tasks and how my day had been. I also had feedback calls with my supervisor to discuss how I did in each task. We also completed a group project looking at RPC's culture.
Skills
I developed my legal research skills during the scheme and my time management - I had a lot of work to complete during the week and so I effectively prioritised tasks and managed my time. I developed my networking skills through the various networking events put on by RPC and through meeting lots of people in the different departments I was sat in over the course of the scheme.
Business Insight
RPC gave us a very good insight during the scheme about life as trainee - this was through interacting with current trainees, working on typical trainee-style tasks as well and getting involved in the business development side of things such as writing an article for the trainee business blog. I met people throughout the firm at all levels of seniority and so was able to get a very well-rounded insight into the firm.
Culture
Everyone was so friendly and welcoming even from before the start of the scheme. In the run-up to the scheme the firm kept in close contact with us with updates on the firm and put us in touch with a trainee buddy before starting. During the scheme we had social events organised as well as workshops to find out more about the diversity initiatives at the firm and I heard anecdotally about social events during the year.
Your Impressions
I loved my time at the firm. The work was challenging but enjoyable and I received really positive feedback from my supervisors. Everyone I met was very friendly and welcoming and was really interested in getting to know me as much as I was interested in getting to know them. The scheme exceeded my expectations and I'm delighted that I will be joining the firm as a trainee.
Yes
The assessment centre for the vacation scheme was challenging but I felt it tested my abilities very fairly. Even though the interviewers have a set list of questions they interacted well with what I said and I felt they were interested in getting to know me and what I could offer. It was easy to prepare for the scheme as we had a pre-joining workshop with advice on how to prepare for day one. I also spoke to my trainee buddy ahead of the scheme and RPC gave us advice on how to prepare for the scheme.
