The Role
The placement entailed real responsibilities and made me feel like I added value to the business. It was a great experience!
I really enjoyed working with my team and that was key in allowing me to be productive. I was always motivated by my team mates and learned a lot from them.
Intel has an "open door" policy. There are no doors! And you can talk to your manager, or their manager about anything that concerns you. My manager always listened to me; always made sure I understood what I was doing and had the right amount of support. When I proved that I was responsible enough to take complete ownership of things, he allowed me to feel empowered and drive my activities myself. You don't feel like an intern here at Intel - you are a full time employee adding value to the business on a daily basis.
Mostly busy as I always had projects and tasks to work on.
It falls down to the individual and his/her capabilities but if you have what it takes to run the show, you will have that opportunity in Intel. I became the first intern in my department to be handed full responsibility of a customer account. From driving all quality issues to managing customer face-to-face meetings, I was completely empowered by my manager to deliver. I'm glad my abilities were utilised to full potential during my time here at Intel.
In short, I will be a more knowledgeable and mature individual going into my final year. I know what the industry is; I know what I want to do and I feel confident.
The Company
Great fun! Work-life effectiveness is taken very seriously at Intel. You don't have to be formally dressed (unless you're meeting customers) at all times. Intel operates a business casual dress code which is very good. Also, you've got an on-site cafe called Java and you will be surprised by the variety of hot and cold drinks available here. The campus is quite nice and it's always fun to take a walk around in the sun when it's out.
I was up and running in less than 4 weeks. There was sufficient overlap time with the previous intern to learn about your job role. Regular 1-to-1 meetings with managers, pre-scheduled trainings and events all contributed to a seamless year. I personally did not have any trouble working here.
I was able to enroll for any training that I genuinely needed. My manager would always share upcoming face to face training events with me so that I could plan ahead. To learn more about how my department operates, I also went for a visit to Ireland where the Intel fabrication plant is. That was a very enlightening and enjoyable experience.

It's hard to say in the current economic climate, but Intel has a "Recent College Graduate" or RCG scheme to hire back interns. They invest a lot in good interns surely to leave a prospect of hiring them back as RCGs in the future.
The Culture
There's always something happening. You also have an Intern Committee to organise events for interns.
Swindon is not too expensive but it is compared to where my university is. Typical rent excl. bills range from £250-400 depending on type of house/location.
Swindon's not terribly impressive but it's not so bad either. Everyone has mixed views about it.
Variety of opportunities with charities and other organisations. There's an Intel Sports & Social Club which is always organising events and you can get highly discounted tickets to concerts and shows incl. travel. I personally play for Intel's cricket club and represent Intel in Wiltshire Cricket Division 1 league.
