Overview
The role consists in joining the daily activities of the desk and complete one or two projects throughout the rotation. Rotations like trading would involve being fully on top of the news and putting ahead some trade ideas, while structuring activities are more related to developing python code to support the strategy development and participating to calls and chats with colleagues. Finally in the quant positions the job is mostly about supporting the activities of the credit trading desks. The day goes from 7.30 am to 7.30 pm usually, with adjustments based on the team
Skills
I have definitely improved my understanding of the working environment and networking. It is very important for an intern to be proactive and reach out to others to understand what work we might enjoy - so make sure you take your time between tasks to really explore what opportunities are available. In terms of existing skills, I was able to leverage my coding and problem solving skills to tackle real life problems, which was very exciting!
Responsibilities
The daily activities gave the right amount of responsibility to us interns. It was quite real and relevant work to do, but with some sort of safety-net, which is totally necessary for someone entering the industry with a fully fresh mind. The training that comes along also prepares you to gradually take more responsibility. It is also possible for you to discuss what you wish to do, and find the best match between what is useful for the desk and your interests.
Support & Guidance
I was fully supported especially during my first rotation and appreciated the efforts to train me in very few days on top of a very short rotation. I also took the opportunity to not only learn from people in my desk, but also chat with employees from other desks, who were always super approachable and ready to give time to help a bit. The desk also gave me a good set of materials to learn from, and possibility to train myself while I was spending time with them, which was great!
Culture
The culture is very centered on the 3 fundamental principles of citi, namely to act in the best interest of clients, provide added value and be responsible. throughout the internship there were many seminars that conveyed a sense of how these principles are applied in practice, and one could also see it in the daily activities at the desk. Colleagues are very supported and it is always possible to chat and learn new exciting things
Your Impressions
I was very happy with the overall experience, despite the difficulties given by working from home practices. I especially appreciated to have had the possibility to work in presence for part of the internship and having met colleagues and attended social events. I feel also that it is invaluable to have had a chance to attend training from very experienced professionals and I think there have been many important skills I have developed and I'll bring for any future placement
Yes
The best thing I can suggest is to be yourselves, from the interview to the very last day of the internship. You will find that the environment is much less formal than you might expect, and everybody enjoys to get to know you just as you are. Be well informed and proactive, and you will definitely succeed from day 0. Do take time to review the culture of the firm, because at Citi it is a really important factor!
