Overview
My role on a day-to-day varied depending on the day and the team I worked with. I usually would start a new day with a new project assigned to me by my manager, making sure to schedule calls with members of different businesses and network when I had time in between projects
Skills
Absolutely. I have learnt how to use Excel - during training we learnt the fundamentals but applying this knowledge to use Excel for projects was crucial to compounding my Excel knowledge. I also learned about Bloomberg, prior I had no knowledge of the platform but now I can confidently say I know how to conduct research and even use BBG and excel combined. Additionally, my networking skills have thoroughly improved.
Responsibilities
As much as compliance allowed really! I worked on a private side desk to start so a lot of the deals were very complex and mostly confidential but I was given lots of tasks to do that did not cross this barrier; I worked on actual pitch books that would go to clients! On my second desk I was also given lots of responsibility, specifically on doing research that would benefit the team.
Support & Guidance
I had ample access to support when I needed it. Citi is a very people based and team oriented bank so that is very important to them. Their first priority is to make sure that you are okay. I sent countless of emails asking questions and not one was answered with hostility, everyone was patient and extremely helpful
Culture
I absolutely love Citi. The culture is refreshing an the team-oriented vibe is very suited to my character. I still felt supported whilst online and even more so once I was able to come into the office. Everyone is smiling and ready to have conversation, from the dining staff to an MD on a random desk you walked past.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship. Despite most of it being virtual, I do not feel like I missed out on too much. I have learned so much, challenged myself, met the most inspiring people and will certainly be coming back!
Yes
Just be yourself throughout the whole application process. No need to pretend to be the 'ideal candidate'; there is a space for everyone at Citi. Make sure to speak to lots of current and past Citi employees and interns; everyone has something useful to say that you can learn from and apply. People are your most valuable insight into Citi.
