Industrial Placement Student - Cloud Engineer Review

I would work with the Cloud team to create and manage the customer infrastructure using Terraform. I helped develop CICD tools and internal tooling used within the company. We were involved in ensuring the successful delivery of infrastructure deployment to our customers. We were consistently working on pushing the boundaries of new technology and ensuring the highest standard of product delivery.

When I first joined the company I had zero knowledge of cloud computing. I was guided through the whole learning process given opportunities to prove myself consistently and deliver real value for the company. Along ]side this I developed upon my existing skills from University such as API integration, programming ability, agile methodologies, and much much more.

I was given a large amount of responsibility throughout my internship. I was trusted to deliver tasks that may not be considered conventional 'intern' work however, I always had the team backing and support knowing that if I needed guidance or help they would be there for me. This allows you to feel confident enough to take responsibility on and feel the reward of the outcome when it inevitably pays off.

Due to Covid my placement was entirely from home, however within seconds from asking for help I had a team member on a call with me. This allowed me to consistently be pushing myself. My manager was always there for me and offered a huge amount of support however, the company as a whole always comes together to offer as much support as possible to your progression.

The company culture was great. However, due to Covid I was never in the office meaning that I perhaps didn't get to experience it to the maximum. This however was counteracted by the companies flexible hours promoting longer lunches and 'kettle talk' before meetings to ensure the culture continues to grow.

I have really enjoyed my internship and I came into it with very high standards of what I wanted to gain from it. It offered many more opportunities than I expected and I feel like I am leaving much better suited for the wider world. It offers skills and opportunities you could never achieve at university.

Just give it a go and when your here make sure to grab as many opportunities as possible. Don't be scared of failure as when you inevitably get something wrong, which will happen everywhere, know you have a fantastic team behind you helping you get it right next time. You will feel confident to take as many opportunities as possible with the support and guidance here and you will grow massively.
