The Role
I really enjoyed my year at Xerox. I got on well with my team and we all worked together to get desired results. A placement is really good experience to have. The best thing about Xerox is that there are many other students that are on placement here too so its like university but at work as there is a big social aspect too it as well.
I was very valued by my colleagues, and was doing work for the team that was needed and appreciated. Some one was always there to ask for help if I was faced with a problem.
At the start of your placement you are given a hand over period by the previous student which I think really helps to intigrate you into the team. After 3 months you have a meeting with your line manager to go over any issues you may face. Throughout placement I was always given support and guidence from my team.
Most of the time there was a perfect balance of work and there was always something to do so you were never bored! You could always ask for more or new tasks to do if you felt you wanted more responsibilty. Some times you would find yourself quite busy if it was the beginning of the month or at the very start of the year when I was still learning things but as previously mentioned there was always help and someone would help you prioritise your work.
You are given a lot of responsibility and some of the work you do is even reviewed at director level. You speak to partners and other employees around the company on a daily basis and can make decisions, such as, whether partner can be given a discount or not.
I think the skills I have picked up will really help me when I get a job after university. I am now more comfortable then ever using the phone and skills on excel and access have doubled. It is useful to know how a big organisation works for future jobs and I think it has made me more focused to do well in my final year at university.
The Company
There was a good balance of work orientated and out of office chat
Every placement at Xerox follows the same process, application, online tests, assessment centre and then you hear if you have the job or not. My team then had specific tasks that the student took over and then depending on how confident you are you can take on other tasks.
You had the opportunity to complete personal training on the Xerox systems but apart from what you learn from you job role and the help I received within my team; Xerox as a whole does not really invest in their placement students.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare from home
Xerox have only just started to branch out and offer more graduate roles. Within my team there is not a specific graduate role or opportunity to come back but if you make the right contacts in other parts of the company im sure the opportunity would arise. I would consider working for Xerox if I could work at a different site closer to home.
The Culture
There was a really good social scene amoung the students. A lot of people had to move to live in Uxbridge whilst working for Xerox so you would never be alone at weekends if you didnt go back home etc... There are also Christmas and Welcome nights out for students.
It was more expensive living in London but we still managed to have nights out and make the most of visiting the sites in london - was a good experience to live here as I come from the midlands
Uxbridge wasnt that good for night life but as mentioned above we were able to go into central london and take advantage of the clubs there
living in london there are many things to do! There are opportunities to get involved in football 11 a side teams etc with work but other than that the students organise their own activites outside of work!
