Overview
I took part in a comprehensive, intensive training programme for the majority of the first 2 weeks. Most of my work involved carrying out individual pension calculations on Microsoft Excel for various defined benefit (DB) pension scheme clients. In addition to this, I assisted with a triennial valuation project for a major pension scheme. Also, I was given various ad hoc data processing and analysis tasks to complete, as well as a research project on valuations concluding in a presentation at the end of the internship.
Skills
Yes, I improved my Microsoft Excel skills as well as my technical actuarial knowledge. I also developed my ability to work in a team and communicate effectively.
Responsibilities
Yes, I got the opportunity to work on real client work for some of the largest pension schemes in the UK. I was treated with respect by both junior and senior members of the team and my views were valued and appreciated.
Support & Guidance
I was given a lot of support and guidance. I was paired with a buddy from my team who assisted me with work and guided me through various processes. There was also a lot of formal technical training sessions which were carried out online.
Culture
The company culture was very friendly and everyone I worked with was approachable and respectful. People were very social and seemed to enjoy their work overall. Sometimes I was expected to work outside of my contracted hours and so did many of the permanent employees but I was always thanked for doing so.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship. It was a good introduction to actuarial work and the people I worked with were friendly and approachable. Despite the internship being a work-from-home experience, it was conducted in a relatively smooth manner so the experience was similar to an office-based internship.
Yes
Make sure to do your research on the firm, actuarial work and the pensions industry before your assessment centre. Also, prepare for competency questions using the STAR technique and practice setting up your camera and microphone before any video interviews.
