Overview
I spent one fantastic month working as a intern in the Pensions Actuarial department. Whilst the internship took place online, there were still many opportunities to speak with other interns and members of staff. Each week consisted of one project, following training earlier in the week. Towards the end of each week there was also the opportunity to do client work to gain a better understanding of what a graduate role involves.
Skills
I have learned how to use LCP's in-house software to calculate valuations of pension schemes, among other things. I've also learned a lot about the UK pensions industry, including the calcuation of a pension. I have developed my Excel skills and my presentational skills through the completion of weekly projects.
Responsibilities
Yes. I was given the responsibility of working on actual meaningful client work within various client teams at LCP. In terms of the intern projects, I was given a lot of autonomy as to how I approached each task and helpful guidance was always available.
Support & Guidance
Whenever I did need support or guidance there was always somebody that I could contact who was happy to help. I was given a buddy (a current graduate in the department) who was my first point of contact if I did need any help.
Culture
The company culture is generally positive and staff encourage eachother. There were many online social events that the interns were encouraged to get involved with, including weekly quizzes. There are many diversity initiatives that staff are encouraged to get involved with.
Your Impressions
I have very much enjoyed the internship. It has certainly met my expectations and I'd definetly recommend it. I only wish that the internship was a bit longer so that I could gain more experience.
Yes
It is important to do your research both on the company and your chosen stream before applying. I would also take the opportunity to ask any questions that you might have whenever you get the chance.
