    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role was to develop software within the realms of two projects. One was enhancing part of the Capital One app, and the other was working on an API used in hackathons. On a day to day basis, this involved writing code, testing it and attending agile ceremonies.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I've definitely developed my programming skills, particularly in regards to needing it to be business standard and explainable to other developers. I've also picked up new skills relating to agile ways of working, learning how to lead relevant meetings. Both of these then fed into developing my communication skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, myself and two other interns were given a lot of responsibility in handling the project for enhancing part of the app, although there were people above us that set up the foundations of the project. With the other project for the API, the initial pieces of work were organised to be ready to just pick up and code ahead of time, but over time as we became more responsible in leading where it went.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • A lot of support was offered. It was very easy to get into contact with people to ask for help via slack, an online messaging platform, and there were points of contact we could go to for guidance e.g. mentors, other people in the pre-existing team we were put in and the grads leading the API project if we were unsure of where else to go.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Capital One
  • Get ready to get stuck in. They are really good at introducing you to the business and what kind of practises they use, and then you are expected to do your best both in terms of producing results and interacting with people throughout the company. They won't be breathing down your neck if you run into issues on your project, but they will push you to get work done well.
