Overview
Typical but will enforced agile methodologies. We have daily stand ups, sprint planning, and programming increments with clear goals. You are given a good amount of freedom here in terms of how you choose to work, as long as you're getting the job done. As an intern your day may be quite full of training and welcome events which may sound daunting but were actually very good.
Skills
I have learnt and developed an outstanding amount of skills in 10 weeks here at Capital One. My work involved back end services, which involved AWS, REST APIs, Spring Framework, etc. These are supported by tools such as Jira, Confluence, Git, etc. Languages used include Java, node.js, Python, but other languages "may" be used in different departments. I learnt a lot about testing software and how to write good code from my mentor.
Responsibilities
I was given two projects, both of which enabled me to develop services that will be consumed by real users. One project is a little more relaxed in terms of responsibility, whilst the other was to be used in production and therefore required a higher standard. The level of responsibility seemed reasonable for an internship, perhaps higher than a typical one.
Support & Guidance
Each intern is assigned their own mentor and buddy to work with. This allows incredibly focused guidance. In addition, I was allocated two grad students to help support a secondary project which is also super helpful. Given the remote working environments, I believe I received a great amount of support. Additionally, the culture here means that many will care for your life outside of work too. I believe this is important to note.
Culture
Very welcoming, helpful, and supportive. No need to be afraid to ask questions here, or to ask for help. There's no set pressure on employees, although as a team we tend to like to reach our targets. This generates a healthy work environment where people want to achieve their goals and are willing to help others succeed too.
Your Impressions
I loved the experience of feeling like I'm actually making a contribution to the company. Additionally I learnt so much from here, the limit is the amount of effort you can put in. The company is willing to invest in my professional development which to me is very important and a huge driving factor. These factors made me feel happy and enjoy working at Capital One.
Yes
If you're here for an internship/placement, definitely give it a try. It's an opportunity to see what you think of the company culture and work life. They are very good at involving interns into the life of real engineers. When you're here, I'd definitely recommend in asking about, and taking part in opportunities wherever possible. It will enhance your professional development and give you something to take away from here.
